The chief rabbi of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the early 17th century, the Tosfos Yom Tov led the Jews through a dark period of pogroms. With a government in chaos and Slovak groups fighting for control, the Cossacks would run violently and rampantly from village to village, massacring tens of thousands r"l and threatening European Jewry.
As brought down by sources like the Sefer Hachassidus (Rav Aharon Marcus), Rav Heller asked for a sign from Heaven as to why this evil decree befell them.
Upon this, the Tosfos Yom Tov undertook reinforcing proper behavior in shul. To emphasize the importance, he composed a Mi Sheberach which was recited every Shabbos in shul, blessing those who didn’t speak during davening and inspiring others to follow.
Centuries later, the legacy of the Tosfos Yom Tov remains. Read in shuls throughout the world, the Mi Sheberach continues to be a source of blessing and inspiration for those who honor the time and place of tefillah.
